The Ice Palace will decorate Palace Square in St.Petersburg. According to its builders, the construction of an Ice Palace is a recreation of the one built on the square in 1740 in honor of Empress Anna Ioannovna in commemoration of the Russian victory over Turkey and it will require between 3 and 5 tons of ice from the lakes of the Leningrad Region.

St.Petersburg specially for the New York Times |
St.Petersburg is a great alternative for the winter leisure for Americans – suggests New York Times special correspondent Steve Doherty. To his opinion Russian is mainly perceived through the works by Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy and Pasternak. Russia is an exotic destination, and St.Petersburg looks like an interesting proposal. However, the city lacks publicity and promotion. Steve told that the main reason of his journey is a big article in which he wants to tell his compatriots what Russia, and St.Petersburg in particular, as a winter destination is. During five days of his staying in the city, he visited a service at St. Nocolas and Kazan Cathedrals in St.Petersburg, Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin and attended the Tsars Ball in there, took a horse ride and strolled along the streets of Dostoyevsky. He told that he had been instructed about the security in the city, however, he found the city friendly and hospitable. The only inconvenience was the lack of the orientation information in English. “St. Petersburg is a magical city I would like to live and will definitely come back!”
